Expanded Role of Software as a Service Providers
Prior to the Widen Appliance, organizations would operate multiple digital asset management systems to accommodate the internal and external need for digital assets. Installed software would address internal demand, controlled by the I.T. department. Hosted software, also referred to as Software as a Service (SaaS), would be used to accommodate external demand and was usually controlled by the marketing department.
The challenge for installed software meeting external demand is the internal infrastructure. Placing a web interface on the software does not enable it for external users. Hosted providers are challenged to meet internal demand because they cannot just burn the software to CD and ship it. The software is modeled around a hosted environment.
