DEAR DR. DAM: Hi, this is Fred and I am calling from Denver, Colorado. I manage the marketing department of a company that distributes sporting goods to various stores located in a number of states. For most of our company history, we only worked in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska but ever since the son of the CEO graduated with a dual major in business and Mandarin Chinese, the company has showed steady growth and we have subsequently expanded into four more states.
This has of course been wonderful for the company but has also put more pressure on marketing to keep supplying and properly distributing quality, branded materials. We haven't had too much of a problem with generating more marketing content, but the organization of the huge number of images has been turning into a nightmare. I kid you not when I say that our corporate image library increased at an exponential rate within a matter of weeks. I wouldn't even be surprised if we now have the largest collection of golf ball, football, and baseball images in the world!
This is certainly a good thing because it prepares our company for the high degree of image based marketing needed for our recent expansions but I have come to the conclusion that our existing digital asset management programs just cannot handle it. The old program worked OK with fewer assets (although even then it was kind of a pain to use), but finding the right images now has become a highly frustrating, time-eating endeavor. I don't even know what the exact problem is with the old program and because the people who designed it kind of left us in the dark, I suppose we will never know why it doesn't work. So, I know we need a new DAM solution and we need it now! What would you recommend I do in this situation?
DEAR FLUSTERED FRED: I can only imagine the nightmare of suddenly having a huge catalog of unorganized assets that are required for dozens of marketing campaigns, and a DAM system that provides more problems than solutions. You certainly do need a new system for digital image management and I recommend one that comes in a software as a service platform. This way, in addition to having the capability to easily organize your digital assets, you will receive excellent advice on the best way to use the system, will get automatic updates, and will never be left in the dark again.
