The risks associated with the public use of assets tend to stay hidden until they’re ready to poke their ugly little heads out and ruin your day. Sure, you might have tons of images, videos and other media in your corporate library... but does that mean you have permission to go ahead and use them?
The answer is often “no,” and confusion regarding what you can and can’t use can cost you a pretty penny if photographers, models, and the owners of brands represented in your media catch on to erroneous usage and come knocking on your door.
For one of the most recent additions to the Widen Media Collective DAM user family, rights management was one of the important reasons for seeking out a new digital asset management system.
“We do have a few photographers who are on contract,” said Jean Paul Gisclair, online manager at the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation. “Even our staff members become photographers at certain points. We also look to the public to get images through social media — through Facebook, through Instagram. The system had to be capable of handling a variety of different types of images and rights for those images.”
With the right DAM software, your organization is better prepared to use assets in a way that accounts for where they came from, what they depict, and corresponding limitations placed on the use of the assets. For example, being able to assign an expiration date to an asset embedded on a web page makes it so that it just stops showing up when it’s supposed to, without any need for someone to manually remove it from the page.
“We feel like Widen, so far, has been great to manage all those pieces,” said Gisclair.
