The Widen API - Taking New Orleans Tourism marketing to the next level

In software, an API can epitomize the notion that an experience is what you make of it. Put simply, an API allows Web applications and systems to talk to each other inside a known structure. Don’t misunderstand; Widen digital asset management software is strong, flexible and meeting the needs of marketers all over the world. But an organization with some of its own development resources can, through APIs, extend the reach of Widen DAM far beyond what we demo for prospective users.

“We felt there was really two needs beyond Widen’s capabilities that the API would provide us some more flexibility,” said Jean Paul Gisclair, online manager at the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation. “One was creating an interface on our website for press and media to go to to be able to go through hand-picked assets that we wanted to show on that site and allow them to download right off the bat. And then, on the other side, we have an upload API that we’re building out. That’s going to give us some really good flexibility because our external users are not really registered users in Widen; they’re interacting through the API.”

Making use of the Widen API enables you and your organization to create whole new user experiences. In Jean Paul’s case, that means being able to give access to carefully curated content in the system without adding the burden of managing new users.

“It’s just a handful of shots that we can kind of hand-pick. They’ll be able to go and order through a light box directly from our website. They’ll still have the option of calling us and saying, “Hey, you know, we want something that’s more unique or different that no one else has had.” But this will help us to reduce the amount of calls and emails that we get,” Gisclair said.

That also makes Widen DAM a useful tool for any New Orleans Tourism staff and partners who might want to direct people (be they colleagues, press, or anybody else) to a web page they know will have the most up-to-date versions of assets. There’s no need to even spend time ordering assets if all you need is a glimpse of the images.
